My Favorite Smoothie Ingredients

Sometimes when I go to the farmer’s market I get some fresh fruit, like strawberries or blueberries. Usually I will eat some fresh, but I usually still end up with some leftover. The blender is a great way to use up some leftover fruit before it goes bad. I have a couple of go to ingredients when it comes to making a smoothie.

Frozen Bananas

Frozen Bananas are probably my favorite ingredient to add to a fruit smoothie. They provide great texture and make the consistency of the smoothie thicker. I like the flavor of bananas, but in a smoothie it is usually a little more subtle and won’t overpower the flavors of the other ingredients.

Ice

Blended ice provides a nice texture and keeps the smoothie cold. It takes a powerful blender to chop up ice, but it is well worth investing in one that can. You do have to be careful with adding too much ice, as it can water down the smoothie when it is fully blended. And if you have a fridge with an attached ice maker (I definitely recommend it) then it is an easy ingredient to come by.

Vanilla Whey Protein

This is a great way to get some extra protein with your smoothie. The vanilla flavoring is usually pretty subtle, and will mix well with other ingredients. Definitely try out different brands though, as the flavor and taste profiles will differ.
